In 1792, INA was established as the first stock insurance
concern in North America and issued the first marine insurance policy
in the United States. INA was also the first to cover the contents of
building against fire. The company developed the American Agency System
in 1808, became the first American company to write insurance in China
in 1897, helped found the American Foreign Insurance Association (AFIA)
in 1818 and established an international department for business on all
continents in 1946.
In Indonesia, PT. ACE INA Insurance was originally invited
to resume business in 1969. It was registered under the name of the American
Insurance Company, one of the ten member companies of the AFIA group.
In 1975, following the Indonesian government new policy
on foreign investment, PT. AFIA Indonesia was established as a joint venture
company and licensed to do business in general insurance. In 1985, CIGNA
Worldwide Insurance acquired the AFIA group worldwide. This changed the
company's name to PT. Asuransi CIGNA Indonesia.
In July 1999, PT. ACE INA Insurance was formed and the
new company's operations began in Indonesia in October 1999, as a result
of the acquisition of the CIGNA Property and Casualty Division by the
ACE Group. Despite the heavy restructuring activities due to the acquisition,
PT. ACE INA Insurance managed to complete its first business year with
a gross written premium of 62.5 billion Rupiah and continued to book significant
growth to 74.85 billion Rupiah in 2000.
